One backup copy, one point of failure. Fixed with a secondary backup to AWS S3.
Fives Cail-KCP, a sugar and bioenergy equipment manufacturer with over 75 years in the industry, a Uniware client for over a decade. Their backup lived in one place only, with no offsite copy if anything went wrong.
The problem
One backup, one location. A single point of failure.
Fives Cail-KCP's backups, taken with Veeam, lived entirely on-premises, with no offsite copy anywhere. That created two real risks:
- The backup software ran on Windows, exposed to the same malware risks as any other Windows machine, with no separate, protected copy elsewhere
- As their data grew year over year, keeping a single on-premises copy became harder to manage and less flexible to scale
The solution
A secondary backup, sent straight to AWS S3.
Uniware configured a secondary backup destination in AWS S3, integrated directly with Fives Cail-KCP's existing Veeam setup. Backups now exist in two places: the original on-premises copy, and a secondary copy in S3. If anything ever happens to the primary environment, the S3 copy can be downloaded and restored directly, with no dependency on a single location.
AWS Native Services
Before and after
From one copy to two, with one always offsite.
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Backup location | On-premises only | On-premises plus AWS S3 |
| Malware exposure | Single Windows-based copy at risk | Secondary copy isolated in the cloud |
| Scalability | Fixed on-prem capacity | Elastic, scales with S3 |
The results
A backup that isn't dependent on one location anymore.
- Backups now exist in two separate locations, on-premises and AWS S3
- Data can be restored directly from S3 if the primary environment is ever affected
- Storage scales elastically with S3, no upfront capacity planning needed
- Ten-year client relationship, still active today
A quote from our client
Their dedication and real interest to provide the required technology and support to their customers, unlike some vendors who simply push some new technology for commercial interest.
