No firewall, no remote access, and unreliable power. Fixed with a full cloud and security bundle.
IEC FabChem, a water disinfection and process heat transfer equipment manufacturer in Chennai. COVID cut off physical access to their factory server room, with no way to work remotely and no security in place at all.
The problem
No remote access, no firewall, and an unreliable power supply.
IEC FabChem's file server and Tally accounting server were both hosted on-premises at their Gummidipoondi factory. When COVID made physical office access impossible, several problems became urgent at once:
- No remote access existed at all, staff couldn't reach the file server or Tally application from home
- No firewall or endpoint protection was in place anywhere in the environment
- Frequent power cuts at the factory made on-premises infrastructure unreliable, with no dependable electricity or internet to fall back on
- Growing day-to-day data from accounting and invoicing was accumulating faster than the ageing on-prem servers could comfortably handle
The solution
A full cloud and security bundle, not just a migration.
Rather than simply moving the servers, Uniware delivered this as a single bundled solution: cloud hosting, remote access, and security, all set up together.
Migration
he file server and Tally accounting server were both moved to Windows-based EC2 instances in AWS. The file server migration, including setting folder-level permissions for different teams as data moved across, took roughly two to four hours. The Tally server backup was restored and accessible within about an hour.
Secure Access
A Remote Desktop Client Access License was set up to allow multiple users to connect to the Tally server at once. A physical Sophos firewall was installed on-site at the factory, with endpoint protection software rolled out across every machine, configured by Uniware's team and then handed over with training for IEC FabChem's own IT staff to manage day to day.
Monitoring and Backup
CloudWatch alarms were set up to flag unusual CPU or memory activity, alongside VPC logging and backup of the database connected to the Tally application.
AWS Native Services
Before and after
From no protection to a fully managed, secure environment.
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Remote access | None | Secure RDP and SSL VPN access from anywhere |
| Security | No firewall or endpoint protection | Physical firewall + endpoint protection across all devices |
| Power reliability | Frequent on-prem power cuts | Cloud-hosted, no dependency on local power |
| Data capacity | ~500GB | 750GB+, resized as needed |
The results
A secure, cloud-hosted environment that hasn't looked back since.
- Remote access enabled for the first time, from anywhere
- No downtime issues reported since the move
- Full security bundle in place: firewall, endpoint protection, and centrally managed policies
- Storage grown from roughly 500GB to over 750GB as needed, with no new hardware
- Uniware conducts yearly preventive maintenance to keep policies current
